According to research found by a 2014 study you should wait till age 23 to move in or marry. Age is actually a big factor in determining divorce.
STUDY INVESTIGATED WHAT LEADS TO DIVORCE
Arielle Kuperberg, a sociologist at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro gathered marriage status data for over 7,000 married Americans from 11 years of responses provided to the US National Surveys of Family Growth. Some of the couples were divorced, and some had stayed together.
ADDITIONAL FINDINGS FROM RESEARCH
Kuperberg concluded that age was actually a major predictor of divorce. Additional findings include:
• There was a 60% divorce rate amongst couples who cohabited or married at age 18.
• There was a 30% divorce rate amongst people who cohabited or married at age 23. That marks a 50% decrease in divorce just for waiting five more years.
CHANGING POPULAR BELIEF ABOUT DIVORCE
Prior to these findings the commonly held belief was that people that lived together prior to marriage were not as successful when it came to marriage. But Kuperberger’s research countered that thought. “For so long, the link between cohabitation and divorce was one of these great mysteries in research,” Kuperberg said. “What I found was that it was the age you settled down with someone, not whether you had a marriage license, that was the biggest indicator of a relationship’s future success.”
WORKING WITH A DIVORCE ATTORNEY
