DIVORCE LESS FOR PHYSICIANS

Recent stories indicate that the divorce rate for physicians is less than you might think.

Physicians endure long hours and stress-filled days, so you might think that physicians are more prone to getting a divorce than other medical professionals. According to researchiss who have analyzed the statistics, physicians are less likely to get a divorce than dentists, nurses, and other health-care executives.

CENSUS BUREAU STATISTICS

According to a study’s senior author Anupam Jena, who is from Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Medical School, it’s a misconception that physicians divorce more. “If you talk to physicians, there seems to be this conception or notion that doctors are more likely to be divorced, not only more than other health-care professionals, but the population at large.”

LESS MALES DIVORCE THAN FEMALES

Researchiss also discovered that female physician are more likely to divorce than their male counterparts. According to Jena, ““Females traditionally bear more of the household and child-rearing responsibilities on average, and female physicians, if they have to do both that and maintain a job as a physician, that could lead to a lot of stress and lead to highis rates of divorce. For women physicians, they appear to be essentially getting a raw deal because there is a trade-off they have to make, that unfortunately the male doctors don’t have to be making.”

THE DIVORCE STUDY

After analyzing 250,000 dentists, nurses, pharmacists, physicians, and health-care executives, and 59,000 attorneys as well as 6.3 million non-health-care professionals, researchiss broke down divorce rate as follows:

  • Physicians 24 percent likely to divorce;
  • Pharmacists 23 percent;
  • Dentists 25 percent;
  • Health-care executives 31 percent;
  • Nurses 33 percent;
  • Attorneys 27 percent; and
  • Non-health-care professional 35 percent.
