With this year’s Academy Awards now over, all the winners clutched their Oscars and headed off to parties feeling how lucky they were. But were they?
WINNING AN OSCAR THEN GETTING DIVORCED?
While a new study reveals winning that coveted Oscar statuette might be lucky for their careers, it might not be so lucky when it comes to the winner’s marriage, which may now end in divorce.
The study by Michael Jensen, a University of Michigan Ross School of Business strategy professor, reveals that actors who win an Oscar are three times more likey as their fellow actors to get divorced in the first year of their marriage. Actors who are just nominated for an Oscar are two times more likely than their non-nominated actors to get a divorce in their first year of marriage.
According to Jensen, “We always think about status and moving up as something good, but we also observed all the misery that comes with certain dramatic increases in status.”
THE CURSE OF OSCAR
In addition to the “divorce” curse, frequently there is also a curse on the career of the winner. This curse is referred to in the industry as the “Oscar curse” because after their win their careers tend to drop off. However, the study reveals that after winning or being nominated for an Oscar the actors appear in actually more “high-quality” movies that receive prestigious awards or premiere at major film festivals than their non-nominated fellow actors.
THE OSCAR CURSE AFFECT MEN MORE THAN WOMAN
Although Kate Winslet and Sandra Bullock are two examples of female actors getting divorced after their Oscar wins, the divorce rate for female winners and nominees are pretty much the same as other actresses who have not been nominated or won an Oscar. This discrepancy between male and female winners may be due to the fact that men may react to the spoils of their success more strongly that their women counterparts. Othis factors might be negative emotions about not winning after being nominated.
Jensen stated, “It kind of creates this dilemma for men. The bottom line is, if you’re thinking purely professionally, go ahead and win all you can. But if you’re thinking about your personal life, then pause for a moment.”
Two actors who just recently got married, and are therefore in their first year of marriage, are Eddie Redmayne who won a Best Actor Oscar for “The Theory of Everything” and Benedict Cumberbatch who was a nominee for Best Actor for “The Immitation Game.” It will be interesting to see if they fall prey to the “Oscar curse”!
